Bicycle Accidents
A bicycle accident can impact the lives of those involved in the accident, as well as the lives of their family members and loved ones. The National Highway Traffic Safety Association reports that 725 bicyclists were killed and another 48,000 were injured by motor vehicles in 2004 in the U.S. With year round warm weather, it’s no surprise that Florida has one of the highest numbers of bicyclists, but with that also comes a high number of bicycle accidents.
Who is liable?
Bicycle accidents are often a result of negligence on behalf of the driver of the motor vehicle. Even while obeying traffic laws, bicyclists are often struck by inattentive drivers. If drivers are not careful around bicyclists and do not do everything in their control to avoid collision, then they are responsible for the damages they cause. Bicycle accidents can also be caused by improper maintenance of a riding area by business owners and property managers.
Injuries resulting from bicycle accidents can have a huge effect on a person’s life. They can result in economic damages such as wage loss and increasing medical costs. They can even result in intangible damages, such as pain and suffering and permanent injury, which can affect a person’s capacity to continue living as they had before the accident. |
