Accidental Shootings
People are often injured or killed by a gun that was discharged accidentally or unintentionally. An accidental shooting can have a huge impact on the lives of those involved as well as the lives of their family members and loved ones. Sadly, many of the people affected by this type of tragedy are children. Unintentional shootings account for nearly 20% of all gun-related fatalities among children. Furthermore, the chance of being severely injured from the result of an accidental shooting is seven times more likely for children living in the south than in the northeast according to the National Safe Kids Campaign.
Who is Liable?
Unfortunately, many of these accidents can be prevented with proper gun care. Part of the responsibility of owning a gun is to take reasonable precautions to ensure that only appropriate parties have access to the weapon. Children and untrained parties can cause serious gun injuries and wrongful death if they have access to firearms. The firearm owners are responsible for securing their weapons and keeping them out of the hands of children. If a firearm owner is negligent in storage of the weapon, innocent people may suffer the consequences. |
